Snoring

Snoring is the noise produced during sleep when the flow of air through the mouth and throat is partially blocked. It occurs as a result of the relaxed tissues in the throat vibrating as air passes over them, creating the characteristic sound of snoring. Snoring is a common condition, and it can range from occasional and mild, to chronic and disruptive.

A dental consultation is an essential step to address snoring, especially when it is associated with sleep apnea or dental-related causes. During the initial consultation, Dr Issa will carefully evaluate your oral health and inquire about your snoring patterns. She will also assess the structure of your mouth and throat to determine if there are factors contributing to snoring.

The oral treatment to alleviate or eliminate snoring includes a custom-fitted mandibular advancement device (MAD) that helps reposition the jaw and tongue to keep the airway open during sleep.> If misaligned teeth or jaw structure contribute to snoring, orthodontic or prosthodontic treatments may be recommended to reposition the teeth and improve airflow.

Dr Issa may recommend lifestyle changes and healthier sleep habits to help reduce snoring. In severe cases where more conservative treatments are ineffective, palatal implants or other surgical procedures to remove excess tissue or address anatomical issues may be considered. This includes procedures like uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) or genioglossus advancement (GA). Surgical interventions are performed by the oral surgeon.

The dental consultation is crucial for determining the most effective treatment plan to help the patient and their partner benefit from a quieter and more restful sleep, and therefore improve their lifestyle.
